Hi! I'm Leah

Owner, designer & maker at Voluptua

I am a dressmaker from Bendigo/Melbourne, Victoria (previously living on the Sunshine Coast, Qld), Australia and I love vintage style and quirky, fun fashion. I've been sewing since I was 12 and wanted to provide better options for clothing for plus sized people like me ever since I started making my own clothing when I was 14.

I've always been a bigger girl and have always struggled to find clothing to fit me nicely, let alone things I actually liked..

I was raised by a family of avid sewists, so naturally I knew that making my own clothing was always an option - so in my teens, that's what I did!

It was only when people started stopping me in the street asking where I'd bought the things I was wearing that I started to think that maybe I could sew things for others like me.

Making clothing for plus size people is something I've been wanting to do since I was in my early teens in the 2000s. Back then there was practically nothing for anyone above a size 14 and I wasn't just going to put up with that!

I went to TAFE, and then uni to learn real industry sewing practices, patternmaking, design principles, fibres and fabrics, fitting & tailoring - all the technical stuff - so that I could do this the right way. And it has become my lifelong passion. I was never into designers or name brands - I just want clothing that fits, looks great and lasts more than a few washes - even better if it doesn't hurt the planet or other people in the process.

The fashion industry has come a long way in terms of size inclusivity since I was a punky teenager tailoring my own band T-shirts to fit my curves better. There are so many more great options for those of us with a few more minutes in our hour glasses - but the fact that I still struggle to find a plus size store in a large shopping centre even now, is ridiculous. So that's why I started Voluptua. To bring the clothing I love to design and wear, to other people like me!

Style shouldn't stop at a size 12!

ROCK YOUR CURVES!

More about Leah

Leah has been sewing and creating ever since she was a little girl. How could she not, when she was raised by generations of sewists? Both of Leah's Grandmothers were professional seamstresses - one even made evening gowns for Myer in Melbourne in the 40s/50s. Leah's Mother and Auntie both were avid sewists too, so when she recieved her first sewing machine for her 14th birthday, it came very naturally to her and she hasn't stopped since. Leah began her fashion studies at highschool, then completed a cert II in fashion at TAFE, then a Diploma in 2014, then went on to complete a Bachelor Degree in Fashion Design in 2016. Since graduating, Leah has been working on building her business by completing the NEIS program and selling her designs at markets and events as well as online. Leah plans to continue growing Voluptua and creating new and exciting designs well into the future.
